Interview with Michael Chou of Midnight Kitchen Tools

The best ideas always seem to come from solving real life problems.

After countless incidents of wrist discomfort caused by scooping cold blocks of ice cream for his kids, Michael Chou decided there had to be a better way to do it. He spent numerous nights designing and perfecting a new form of the classic kitchen tool, and the Midnight Scoop was born. But he didn’t stop there. He then developed a pizza slicer that glides its way through any pizza pie, and from there began partnering his fully fledged business with popular e-commerce sites – growing his brand, his sales, and his customer satisfaction rates.

Michael’s story really proves that when you do your research and provide true value, you can, in fact, reinvent the wheel.

So, who are you and what’s your business?

I’m Michael Chou, the founder of Midnight Kitchen Tools. I’m a dedicated entrepreneur with a passion for creating high-quality kitchen products that enhance the cooking experience. With years of experience in the engineering industry, I saw a need for tools that were both functional and stylish, and thus, Midnight Kitchen Tools was born.

What is your backstory and what inspired you to come up with / pursue this idea?

You might be wondering how our design came to life. By day, I’m an engineer at the Space Physics Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan and work on projects for NASA. It all started one night at midnight when I had the “aha” moment. Subconsciously, I realized that in order to protect my wrist from the discomforts of scooping tremendous amounts of ice cream for my kids, I had to design an ergonomic scoop. There had to be a smarter and easier way to scoop cold, hard ice cream, right? As many of you know, ergonomic products are focused on comfortability, efficiency, and safety.

Taking this idea and developing countless redesigns and prototypes, the Midnight Scoop was born. The name of the product is a reminder of the many nights spent perfecting a smart ice cream scoop design. “Midnight” would come and go, and I would still be working. The end product is a beautiful heirloom-quality ice cream scoop design that is…perfect.

Years after the success of the Midnight Scoop, I discovered another kitchen utensil that vastly needed improvement. In 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic when fear was at its worst, many restaurants and fast-food places were closed. I didn’t want to risk getting my family infected from COVID-19 so I tried my best to make my own food. I bought frozen pizza from the grocery stores and also made it from scratch.

My biggest issue was not having a proper pizza slicer that I liked to use. I found many pizza cutters uncomfortable to hold, unable to cut, and impossible to clean. I decided it was time to develop a new design and also spent countless nights designing the Midnight Slice from the handle to the blade.

Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product or service- what was that like?

Here at Midnight Scoop, we have a firm grasp and understanding of the risks and challenges associated with of any manufacturing project–especially in a revolutionary new product.

Working as an engineer, I have solved many quality/design/manufacturing issues. All of those projects have been completed successfully.

Design: The design of the Midnight Scoop began with brainstorming and sketching out ideas for the product. Once a basic design was established, more detailed sketches and computer-aided design (CAD) models were created. These CAD models allowed the designers to refine the shape, size, and features of the scoop.

Prototyping: With the design finalized, a physical prototype of the scoop was created using various prototyping methods, such as 3D printing. The prototype was then tested and refined to ensure that it met the design specifications and functioned properly. This process involved multiple iterations of prototyping and testing until a final prototype was approved.

Manufacturing: Once the final prototype was approved, the manufacturing process began. This involved selecting materials, developing tooling and molds, and setting up production lines. The Midnight Scoop is made from high-grade stainless steel, which was chosen for its durability.

Quality Control: During the manufacturing process, strict quality control measures were implemented to ensure that each scoop met the high standards set by Midnight Kitchen Tools. This included inspections and testing of each scoop to ensure that it was free of defects and met the design specifications.

Overall, the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing the Midnight Scoop involved careful planning, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality. The result is a durable and functional kitchen tool that has become a favorite among home cooks and professional chefs alike.

Describe launching the company… Where did you start?

Launching a new company can be a complex and challenging process that involves careful planning and execution.

Conduct Market Research: Before launching a new company, it’s important to conduct market research to identify potential customers, competitors, and market trends. This research can help you determine whether there is a need for your product or service and how best to position your company in the market.

Develop a Business Plan: Prepare a business plan that outlines the goals, strategies, and financial projections for the new company. A well-developed business plan can help you secure funding, attract investors, and guide the growth of your company.

What has worked to attract & retain customers so far?

Our main sales channels are our own website, Amazon, Wayfair and The Grommet. We acquire new customers by various advertising channels, such as Google and Amazon. We rely heavily on social media platforms, bloggers, and our own posts.

We have found that positive customer reviews through Amazon and other websites are important in generating new business. Providing great customer service is a must for us to be able to attract and retain business.

How are things going today and what does the future look like?

Our business continues to evolve into a movement that is changing the way kitchen tools are designed. I want everyone to own great kitchen tools!

As consumer preferences and needs evolve, there are opportunities for us to develop new products that meet emerging needs or trends. For example, as more people tend to cook at home, there are opportunities to develop innovative kitchen tools or gadgets that make cooking easier and more enjoyable.

The rise of e-commerce and online shopping has created new opportunities for our businesses to reach customers and sell products online. We have developed robust e-commerce capabilities, optimized our digital marketing and advertising strategies, and leverage social media to reach and engage with customers.

Collaborating with other companies has opened up new markets and opportunities for growth. We have partnered with other kitchenware brands and food bloggers to help Midnight Kitchen Tools reach new audiences and expand our customer base.

We are focusing on expanding into international markets. However, it requires careful planning, market research, and an understanding of cultural differences and local regulations. By expanding into new markets, Midnight Kitchen Tools will have access to new customers and revenue streams.

Any advice for others who are just starting out?

Focus on your customers: Understanding your customer’s needs and preferences is crucial to developing products and services that they will love. Make sure you are regularly gathering feedback from your customers and using that feedback to improve your business.

Stay adaptable: Markets and consumer preferences can change quickly, so it’s important to stay nimble and be able to pivot quickly when needed. Be open to trying new approaches and strategies, and don’t be afraid to make changes when something isn’t working.

Invest in your team: Your team is one of your most valuable assets, so make sure you are investing in their development and well-being. Offer training and professional development opportunities, create a positive work culture, and prioritize work-life balance.

Take risks: Starting and growing a business requires taking calculated risks. Don’t be afraid to try new things or take on challenges that might feel daunting at first. Just make sure you are balancing risk with a thoughtful approach to decision-making.
